Singapore’s national team delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over Mongolia in an international friendly at Jalan Besar Stadium, Kallang.
The Lions’ skipper earned his 148th international cap, surpassing former record-holder Daniel Bennett to become Singapore’s most-capped player in history. Fittingly, the evening ended with both a personal triumph for Hariss and an emphatic team performance ahead of a crucial test against China next week.
With 4,234 supporters in attendance, the atmosphere at Jalan Besar Stadium was filled with appreciation for one of Singapore football’s most influential figures. Hariss, 35, led the Lions onto the pitch for his record-breaking appearance before receiving a standing ovation when substituted in the 76th minute.
The veteran midfielder’s achievement added extra significance to a match that saw Singapore dominate from start to finish against a Mongolia side playing their first international fixture in nearly two years.
Singapore began aggressively and created several early opportunities before eventually finding the breakthrough in the 23rd minute.
Following a foul on Song Ui-young inside the penalty area, defender Safuwan Baharudin stepped up confidently and blasted his spot-kick into the top corner to hand the Lions a deserved lead.
The hosts continued to press and doubled their advantage just before halftime. An incisive pass from winger Farhan Zulkifli released Song, who finished clinically at the near post to make it 2-0 in the 38th minute.
Unlike previous matches where momentum occasionally faded after the interval, Singapore maintained their intensity throughout the second half.
Substitute Kyoga Nakamura delivered a precise free-kick in the 58th minute that was met by Shawal Anuar, whose powerful header extended the lead to three goals.
The final flourish arrived in the 88th minute when Ikhsan Fandi rose above the defence to head home a cross from Irfan Najeeb, sealing a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
The victory offers valuable momentum for Singapore as they prepare for a significantly tougher challenge against China on 5 June.
