Malaysia National Team losing to New Zealand National Team scoring 0-4 in the International Friendly Match Tier 1 at North Harbour Stadium, Auckland.
The match offered valuable experience to Malaysia’s younger players like Harith Haiqal, Nooa Laine, and Arif Aiman, but highlighted the gap in quality between the two sides.
Malaysia started the match with a mix of youth and experience, fielding promising talents alongside established players. However, an early setback occurred when Darren Lok, the national team’s striker, was forced off with an injury in the 18th minute, making way for Akhyar Rashid.
The All Whites posed a threat from the beginning, creating two golden opportunities through aerial attacks, but Malaysian goalkeeper Ahmad Syihan Hazmi was up to the challenge, keeping the scores level. Malaysia’s best chance of the half came from a counterattack led by Arif Aiman, whose shot was well-saved by New Zealand’s keeper, keeping the game scoreless at halftime.
The second half saw New Zealand take control of the match. Elijah Just broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse with a simple finish. The goal shifted the momentum entirely in favor of the hosts.
Just eight minutes later, Matthew Garbett doubled New Zealand’s lead with a powerful shot, leaving Malaysia scrambling to regain their composure. Despite Malaysia’s efforts to claw back into the game, the introduction of Chris Wood proved decisive. The towering striker, who had started on the bench, made an immediate impact, heading in New Zealand’s third goal in the 77th minute.
As Malaysia pushed forward in search of a consolation, they were caught on the break, allowing Kosta Barbarouses to add a fourth goal in the dying moments. The match ended 4-0, with Malaysia unable to recover from New Zealand’s second-half dominance.
