Spain secured top spot in Group H at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay in a fiercely physical encounter that saw La Roja battle through relentless challenges before capitalising on a costly goalkeeping error.

The victory confirmed Spain as group winners with seven points, while Uruguay’s World Cup journey came to a disappointing end after finishing third in the standings.

The contest was defined more by aggressive challenges than flowing football, with Uruguay turning the match into a bruising battle from the opening whistle.

Frequent fouls, heavy tackles and repeated confrontations prevented Spain from establishing their trademark possession-based style. American referee Ismail Elfath adopted a lenient approach throughout the encounter, allowing numerous robust challenges to go unpunished and drawing frustration from the Spanish camp.

Despite the physical pressure, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continued to produce flashes of quality, repeatedly attracting multiple defenders while demonstrating composure beyond his years.

Recognising the nature of the contest, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente opted for a more physical starting lineup, bringing Mikel Merino and Marcos Llorente into the side in place of Dani Olmo and Pedro Porro to add strength and aerial presence.

Uruguay, under Marcelo Bielsa, executed a disciplined and combative game plan that largely neutralised Spain for much of the opening half.

However, everything changed moments before the interval.

Álex Baena unleashed what appeared to be a routine effort on goal, but veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made a stunning handling error, allowing the ball to slip into the net to hand Spain an unexpected breakthrough.

Adding to Uruguay’s misery, influential midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered an injury during the same sequence and was forced off before halftime, depriving Bielsa’s side of one of their defensive anchors.

The magnitude of Muslera’s mistake proved decisive, with the experienced goalkeeper replaced at halftime.

The second half became even more combative as Uruguay pushed desperately for an equaliser.

De la Fuente responded by protecting key midfielder Pedri, substituting him to avoid the risk of suspension after concerns over the referee’s inconsistent control of the match.

Spain came closest to doubling their advantage when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar after an impressive attacking move, while Uruguay continued to struggle to create clear-cut opportunities despite increasing their attacking pressure.

As frustration grew, the South American side benefited from another controversial refereeing decision late in the contest when Nicolás de la Cruz escaped what many believed should have been a red card following another dangerous challenge.

Nevertheless, Spain remained composed defensively to preserve their slender lead until the final whistle.

The victory ensured Spain completed the group stage unbeaten and finished as Group H winners, maintaining their momentum heading into the knockout rounds.

Although their performance lacked the attacking fluency that has characterised previous outings, La Roja demonstrated resilience and maturity in overcoming one of the tournament’s most physically demanding contests.

For Uruguay, the defeat brought an early end to their World Cup campaign. Bielsa’s side managed to unsettle Spain for long periods but ultimately paid the price for Muslera’s costly error and their inability to convert pressure into goals.

Spain now advance to the Round of 32 with growing confidence, while Uruguay leave the tournament earlier than many had anticipated.
