Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey came to an end on Wednesday after a 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final Group B match at Lumen Field, Seattle.
Although the result confirmed Qatar’s elimination, the Gulf nation departed the tournament with valuable experience and several encouraging performances that could serve as a foundation for future World Cup campaigns.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, meanwhile, boosted their hopes of progressing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after securing their first victory of the competition at Seattle.
The Europeans took control midway through the first half through teenage winger Kerim Alajbegovic, who opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a composed finish.
Just five minutes later, Bosnia doubled their advantage in fortunate circumstances. Veteran captain Edin Dzeko, making his landmark 150th international appearance, created danger inside the penalty area, with the ball eventually deflecting into the net off Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake for an own goal.
Despite trailing by two goals, Qatar refused to fold. Their persistence was rewarded in the 42nd minute when legendary captain Hassan Al-Haydos pulled one back to reignite hopes of a comeback.
The AFC representatives nearly entered halftime level after Pedro Miguel struck the post deep into stoppage time, while Dzeko had earlier rattled the opposite upright as both sides traded chances in an entertaining first half.
After a difficult opening 30 minutes, Qatar grew into the contest and arguably produced their best football of the tournament during large stretches of the second half.
Led by star forward Akram Afif, the Asian champions pressed forward in search of an equaliser. Afif came close shortly after the restart when his effort flashed into the side netting, while Qatar continued to threaten with energetic attacking play.
However, Bosnia’s defence stood firm, and Qatar were ultimately punished for their missed opportunities.
Substitute Mamic delivered the decisive blow in the 80th minute, restoring Bosnia’s two-goal cushion and effectively ending Qatar’s hopes of rescuing a result.
Qatar finish Group B with one point after drawing 1-1 with Switzerland and suffering defeats to Bosnia and eventual group winners Switzerland’s other rivals. While the campaign ends in disappointment, the tournament provided invaluable exposure against elite international opposition.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the victory lifted them to four points and kept alive their chances of reaching the Round of 32 through the best third-placed ranking pathway.
