Mexico secured top spot in Group A and guaranteed reaching the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after edging South Korea 1-0 in a fiercely contested Matchday 2 encounter at Estadio Akron, Guadalajara.
Javier Aguirre’s side made it two wins from two matches, guaranteeing first place in the group regardless of the final round of fixtures. The result leaves South Korea on three points and now focused on protecting second place to secure direct qualification to the Round of 32.
The victory also extended Mexico’s impressive World Cup record against South Korea, with El Tri now boasting three consecutive World Cup victories over the Asian side following previous triumphs in 1998 and 2018.
The contest began at a high intensity as both teams pressed aggressively across the pitch.
South Korea nearly found an early breakthrough in the 16th minute when Son Heung-min lifted an effort over goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, only for Edson Álvarez to produce a spectacular overhead clearance off the goal line. The move was later ruled offside, preserving Mexico’s clean sheet.
Mexico responded with attacking intent, and Julián Quiñones forced Kim Seung-gyu into action after meeting Roberto Alvarado’s cross with a powerful header midway through the opening half.
Despite South Korea enjoying longer spells of possession after the cooling break, Hong Myung-bo’s men struggled to create meaningful chances, managing just one shot before halftime.
The breakthrough arrived five minutes after the restart through a costly defensive lapse.
Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled a high ball while colliding with his defender, allowing Luis Romo to react quickest and calmly slot the loose ball into an unguarded net, handing Mexico a deserved 1-0 advantage.
The goal transformed the contest as South Korea pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser.
Mexico’s defence was tested during the closing stages, but goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced several outstanding saves to preserve the lead.
His finest moment came in the 87th minute when he brilliantly denied Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header before immediately reacting to stop the striker’s follow-up effort.
South Korea continued to press deep into stoppage time, but headers from Lee Han-beom and Cho Gue-sung narrowly missed the target as Mexico held firm until the final whistle.
The victory confirms Mexico as Group A winners, ensuring a more favourable Round of 32 path, while South Korea must now defeat South Africa in their final group fixture to secure second place and avoid a far more difficult knockout draw.
Mexico’s disciplined defensive display, combined with Romo’s decisive finish and Rangel’s heroic goalkeeping, underlined why Aguirre’s men have emerged as one of the early standout teams of the tournament.
