Saudi Arabia delivered a disciplined and determined performance to hold two-time world champions Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group H match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami.

The Green Falcons entered the contest as underdogs against Marcelo Bielsa’s experienced Uruguayan side, but a tactically astute display nearly produced a famous victory before Uruguay fought back late in the second half.

Saudi Arabia approached the match with a compact and organized defensive structure, keeping the lines close together and limiting space for Uruguay’s attacking players.

Although Uruguay enjoyed the majority of possession during the first half, they struggled to create the clear-cut chances many had expected against a well-drilled Saudi defence.

The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute when defender Abdulelah Al Amri capitalized on a costly mistake by veteran Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera during a set-piece situation.

The Saudi defender reacted quickest to the loose ball and converted from close range, rewarding Al Akhdar’s efficiency and highlighting one of their biggest strengths throughout the match — their threat from dead-ball situations.

The goal sent Saudi Arabia into halftime with a deserved 1-0 lead and placed increasing pressure on the South American giants.

Trailing at the interval, Uruguay emerged with far greater urgency in the second half.

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa made tactical adjustments that significantly improved his side’s attacking output, with La Celeste increasing the tempo and applying sustained pressure around the Saudi penalty area.

Crosses and aerial deliveries became Uruguay’s primary weapon as they searched for a route back into the match.

Despite the mounting pressure, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais produced several crucial saves to preserve his team’s advantage and frustrate the Uruguay forwards.

Saudi Arabia appeared on course for a famous World Cup triumph, but Uruguay eventually found a breakthrough in the 80th minute.

After another dangerous attack, Al Owais was unable to fully deal with a rebound, allowing Maximiliano Araujo to react quickest and slot home the equaliser.

The goal ended Saudi Arabia’s hopes of securing all three points, but it could not overshadow what had been an outstanding collective performance.

Both teams pushed for a winner during the closing stages, yet neither could find the decisive goal as the match ended level at 1-1.

While Saudi Arabia may feel disappointed to have surrendered their lead late in the contest, the result represents an important achievement against one of the strongest teams in the group.

The Green Falcons showcased tactical discipline, defensive resilience and impressive efficiency in front of goal, proving they can compete with elite opposition on football’s biggest stage.

The point leaves Saudi Arabia well-positioned heading into their next Group H encounter against Spain on Sunday, while Uruguay will know they must improve if they are to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.
