After enduring a difficult run of results at Catalunya and Mugello, MotoGP rookie sensation Toprak Razgatlioglu arrives at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix with renewed confidence and optimism as the championship returns to the Balaton Park Circuit.
For Razgatlioglu, the venue carries special memories. Just one year ago, the Turkish star delivered a flawless performance at Balaton Park, completing a clean sweep of victories in the World Superbike Championship and establishing himself as the undisputed master of the circuit.
Now, he returns with a different challenge ahead — taming the demanding stop-and-go layout aboard a MotoGP machine.
Unlike the fast-flowing circuits of Catalunya and Mugello, Balaton Park’s tight and technical configuration appears tailor-made for Razgatlioglu’s aggressive braking style and ability to maximize corner-entry speed.
The former WorldSBK champion openly admitted his excitement about returning to a track where he has previously excelled.
“I really like this track. It’s quite small, and maybe not every MotoGP rider enjoys this kind of layout, but I do,” said Razgatlioglu with Crash.net.
“Last year I had a very strong weekend here, so I’m happy to come back.”
The Turkish rider believes the circuit’s unique characteristics could provide a valuable opportunity to continue adapting to MotoGP machinery after showing encouraging progress in recent rounds.
While the final classification at Mugello showed Razgatlioglu outside the points after a post-race penalty for exceeding track limits, the weekend itself offered several positive signs.
Initially finishing 15th before being relegated to 16th, Razgatlioglu nevertheless felt more comfortable with the bike and identified meaningful improvements in performance.
According to the Turkish rider, recent developments have helped him gain greater confidence and understanding of the package.
“The most positive thing is that we made good progress recently and found some solutions that helped me feel better on the bike.”
His primary objective this weekend is straightforward: start where Mugello ended and continue building momentum session by session.
“My hope is to start the weekend at the level we reached at the end of Mugello and then continue improving session after session.”
For Razgatlioglu, Balaton Park represents more than just another Grand Prix.
It is a return to a circuit where he dominated in WorldSBK, a venue that naturally complements his riding style, and perhaps his best opportunity yet to deliver a breakthrough MotoGP performance.
After difficult weekends at Catalunya and Mugello, the Hungarian Grand Prix could become a turning point in the Turkish rider’s rookie MotoGP campaign.
