Malaysia’s women’s doubles stars Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah delivered a commanding performance to book their place in the second round of the 2026 Indonesia Open, spearheading a productive day for the national contingent at the prestigious HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament.

The second-seeded pair showcased their class and composure as they dispatched Canada’s Jackie Dent and Crystal Lai in straight games, 21-13, 21-14, to continue their impressive campaign in Jakarta.

Having reached the latter stages of several major tournaments this season, Pearly-Thinaah once again demonstrated why they remain among the world’s elite women’s doubles partnerships. Their aggressive attacking play and defensive resilience proved too much for the Canadian duo, as the Malaysians wrapped up victory in just two games to advance comfortably into the Round of 16.

The victory serves as another positive statement from Pearly and Thinaah, who have been among Malaysia’s most consistent performers on the international circuit throughout 2026.

After navigating a challenging draw in recent tournaments, the pair looked sharp from the opening rally, controlling the tempo and dictating play with their trademark speed around the net.

With the Paris Olympic cycle now firmly behind them and the road toward future world championship success in focus, the Malaysian duo appear determined to make a deep run at one of badminton’s most prestigious events.

Malaysia also celebrated success in mixed doubles through veteran pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, who battled back from a game down to defeat Indonesia’s Rehan Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.

After dropping the opening game 17-21, the experienced Malaysians responded strongly to claim the next two games 21-16, 23-21 in a thrilling encounter that showcased their fighting spirit.

The victory keeps Malaysian hopes alive in another category as the husband-and-wife partnership continues its pursuit of a major Super 1000 breakthrough.

Women’s singles representative Kisona Letshanaa also produced a notable performance, overcoming Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt in three games.

After winning the first game 21-14, Letshanaa briefly lost momentum in the second before regaining control to seal a 21-13 victory in the decider and secure her place in the next round.

Elsewhere, mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing advanced after a convincing 21-17, 21-9 win over Indonesia’s Marwan Faza and Aisyah Salsabila Pranata.

Women’s doubles combination Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting also progressed following a hard-fought three-game victory against Japan’s Kaho Osawa and Mai Tanabe.

In men’s doubles, national pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik emerged victorious in an all-Malaysian clash against Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, winning 21-15, 21-14 to reach the next stage.

However, it was disappointment for Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien, who fell to China’s Gao Jia Xuan and Wei Ya Xin, while Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai were forced to retire during their match against India’s fourth-seeded pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

Although not in action on this particular results sheet, Malaysian badminton fans will also be closely monitoring the progress of Leong Jun Hao, who recently produced one of the tournament’s biggest first-round upsets by defeating Japanese star Kodai Naraoka.

The men’s singles ace has emerged as one of Malaysia’s most exciting performers this week, and his continued advancement would further strengthen the country’s hopes of a memorable Indonesia Open campaign.
