Timor-Leste moved within touching distance of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 group stage after securing an emphatic 3-0 victory over a 10-man Brunei Darussalam in the first leg of their qualifying playoff at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas.

The Timorese produced a disciplined and clinical performance away from home, capitalising on a crucial first-half red card to place one foot firmly in the tournament proper ahead of next week’s decisive second leg in Kuala Lumpur.

Timor-Leste looked composed from the opening whistle and were rewarded in the 27th minute through midfielder João Rangel, who opened the scoring with a calm finish.

The move began with a perfectly weighted through ball from Claudio Osorio, who spotted Rangel’s intelligent run behind the Brunei defence. The midfielder raced onto the pass before curling a precise right-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Haimie Abdullah Nyaring to hand the visitors a deserved lead.

The turning point arrived just before halftime when Brunei defender Haziq Kasyful Azim was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident involving Zenevio Mota.

Initially missed by the referee, the decision was reviewed on the pitch-side monitor before a penalty was awarded to Timor-Leste and Haziq was dismissed.

Mota made no mistake from the spot in the 43rd minute, coolly sending Haimie the wrong way to double Timor-Leste’s advantage and leave the hosts facing an uphill battle.

With a numerical advantage, Timor-Leste dominated much of the second half and nearly added a third shortly after the restart when Rangel’s long-range strike rattled the woodwork.

Brunei struggled to create meaningful opportunities and thought they had been handed a lifeline midway through the half when a penalty was awarded for a suspected handball. However, after another VAR review, the decision was overturned, preserving Timor-Leste’s two-goal cushion.

The visitors continued to press and eventually found a decisive third goal deep into stoppage time.

Substitute Oatnasio da Silva latched onto a clever layoff from Luis Figo before firing home from close range, sparking celebrations among the Timor-Leste bench and effectively sealing a dominant first-leg performance.

The 3-0 triumph leaves Timor-Leste in a commanding position heading into the return leg and significantly boosts their hopes of reaching the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 group stage.

Should they complete the job next week, Timor-Leste will join defending champions Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and Cambodia in Group A when the competition kicks off on July 24.

For Timor-Leste, the performance was a statement of intent. Clinical in attack, disciplined in defence and ruthless when opportunities arrived, they now stand just 90 minutes away from securing another historic appearance on Southeast Asia’s biggest football stage.
