Penang FC has voiced its support for a collective approach among clubs to safeguard the sustainability of Malaysian football, echoing recent remarks by Dr. Johan Kamal, Chief Executive Officer of Selangor FC, who called for clubs to make necessary sacrifices for the long-term stability of the domestic league.
In an official statement released by the club, Penang FC Chairman Jeffrey Chew Gim Eam emphasized the importance of open and honest discussions among all stakeholders to address the challenges currently facing the league.
According to Chew, the club welcomes Dr. Johan Kamal’s constructive perspective and believes it’s time for all clubs to sit together at the same table to engage in transparent dialogue about the current state of the competition.
“Penang FC takes note of the views expressed by Selangor FC CEO Dr. Johan Kamal regarding the need for all clubs to make sacrifices to ensure the continuity of the Malaysian League,” the statement read.
The club acknowledged that the challenges affecting the competition — particularly financial and structural issues — require a collective and realistic solution that involves cooperation across the league ecosystem.
Chew stressed that Penang FC is prepared to contribute ideas and play its role in the decision-making process, even if difficult choices must be made for the greater good of Malaysian football.
“Our priority must be to build a league that is more stable, competitive, and commercially sustainable — one that benefits clubs, players, and supporters alike,” he added.
The statement further reaffirmed Penang FC’s commitment to being part of a collaborative effort to strengthen the future of Malaysian football. The club also expressed optimism that constructive discussions involving all relevant parties will take place in the near future.
