Japan Badminton Association (JBA) has officially fired the first shot in the psychological war for the 2026 Thomas and Uber Cups.
Announcing their rosters nearly three weeks ahead of the registration deadline, the Japanese giants have signaled they are locked, loaded, and ready for the world championship showdown in Horsens, Denmark.
Set to take place from April 24 to May 3, 2026, the biennial “World Cup of Badminton” will see 16 nations battle for supremacy. For Japan, the mission is clear: reclaim the Thomas Cup glory of 2014 and extend their dominance in the Uber Cup.
Japan’s men’s squad is built on a “Wall of Singles” that features four players within the world’s top 25. Leading the charge is World No. 9 Kodai Naraoka, supported by the red-hot Yushi Tanaka, who is fresh off a title-winning run at the 2026 Swiss Open.
Thomas Cup Men’s Roster:
- Singles: Kodai Naraoka (World No. 9), Kenta Nishimoto (No. 15), Yushi Tanaka (No. 19), Koki Watanabe (No. 21).
- Doubles: Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi (World No. 8), Kakeru Kumagai/Hiroki Nishi (No. 27), Yuichi Shimogami/Takumi Nomura (No. 31).
With Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi anchoring the doubles, Japan presents a nightmare scenario for Group B rivals Malaysia, England, and Finland.
The women’s squad looks even more formidable. Three-time World Champion Akane Yamaguchi (World No. 4) headlines a team that boasts terrifying depth in both disciplines. Japan, 6-time winners, are the overwhelming favorites to top Group B.
Uber Cup Women’s Roster:
- Singles: Akane Yamaguchi (World No. 4), Tomoka Miyazaki (No. 9), Riko Gunji (No. 24), Manami Suizu (No. 39).
- Doubles: Yuki Fukushima/Mayu Matsumoto (World No. 6), Rin Iwanaga/Kie Nakanishi (World No. 7), Arisa Igarashi/Chiharu Shida (No. 15).
The challenge is even steeper in the Uber Cup. Japan’s women’s squad shares Group B with Malaysia, Turkey, and South Africa. Japan, six-time champions, have unveiled an “All-Star” cast that looks nearly impenetrable.
