BG Pathum United has stopped running for Masatada Ishii. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the parted ways with the Japanese tactician on Friday morning, less than 48 hours after their disappointing exit from the Shopee Cup 2025/26.
The final straw for the BG Pathum board was the 1–1 draw against a 10-man Selangor FC at the MBPJ Stadium. Despite having a numerical advantage for over 65 minutes, Ishii’s men failed to find the winner they desperately needed to advance, finishing third in Group A and missing out on the semi-finals.
Ishii, who was appointed on October 30, 2025, with much fanfare following his departure from the Thailand national team, leaves the BG Stadium after just 98 days in charge. While his overall record of 7 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses in 13 matches sounds respectable on paper, the context is what sealed his fate.
Under Ishii’s short tenure, the wealthy Pathum Thani outfit has been dumped out of three major competitions, including the AFC Champions League Two, Chang FA Cup, and Shopee Cup.
With three trophies now out of reach, BG Pathum United finds themselves in a precarious position. They currently sit 5th in the Thai League, a staggering 14 points behind leaders Buriram United. Their only realistic hope for silverware in 2026 now lies in the Muangthai Cup (League Cup), where they have reached the quarter-finals.
