Malaysia U23 head coach Nafuzi Zain has emphasized the importance of adaptability as his side prepare to face hosts Thailand U23 in their final Group F fixture of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers Group F on Tuesday night.
The showdown at Thammasat Stadium will decide the fate of the Young Tigers, who currently trail Thailand by a single point. Malaysia’s campaign has so far been a mixed bag – a narrow defeat to Lebanon followed by a resounding 7-0 victory over Mongolia.
However, beyond the quality of the opposition, the weather could become Malaysia’s toughest opponent. Heavy rainfall has struck Bangkok consistently in recent days, raising the prospect of a rain-soaked and waterlogged pitch.
Nafuzi, speaking to media at the team hotel on Monday, stressed the need for his players to be ready for unpredictable conditions.
“We know for the past two or three days it has been raining heavily, so we must be prepared to play in the rain,” Nafuzi said.
He further explained that while Malaysia would not abandon their usual style, the team would adopt a more suitable approach to handle a wet pitch and slippery ball.
“In these conditions, it’s not that we cannot play our normal game, but we may need to adapt in the right way to perform effectively in the rain and on a wet surface,” he added.
Thailand, unbeaten so far, go into the clash with the advantage of a one-point cushion. For Malaysia, only a victory guarantees progression to the next round, making this fixture nothing short of a must-win battle.
Kick-off between Thailand U23 and Malaysia U23 is scheduled for 8:30 PM (Malaysian time) on Tuesday at Thammasat Stadium, Pathum Thani.
