Four-time world champions Germany launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a commanding 7-1 victory over Curaçao in their Group Stage opener at NRG Stadium, Houston.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side delivered a dominant attacking display to begin their quest for a fifth world title, overwhelming the Caribbean debutants with a relentless offensive performance inspired by Felix Nmecha, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala and Deniz Undav.
While Curaçao celebrated a historic first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, Germany’s quality ultimately proved far too much as Die Mannschaft sent an early statement to the rest of the tournament.
Just six minutes into the match, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha opened the scoring after exchanging passes with Florian Wirtz before curling a precise effort into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.
The early breakthrough ignited the German supporters inside the stadium and set the tone for what would become an attacking masterclass.
With creative stars Wirtz, Musiala and Leroy Sané pulling the strings, Germany dominated possession and repeatedly stretched Curaçao’s defense throughout the opening half.
Despite Germany’s control, Curaçao enjoyed a moment that will forever be remembered in the nation’s football history.
After a defensive mix-up involving Nico Schlotterbeck, the ball fell kindly to Juninho Comenencia, whose deflected effort slipped past returning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the 40th minute.
The equaliser sparked wild celebrations among the Curaçao supporters, marking the Caribbean nation’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup.
The goal also carried added significance as it came against Germany and spoiled what had otherwise been a comfortable return to international football for Neuer.
Germany quickly recovered from the temporary setback. Schlotterbeck redeemed himself by powering home a header from a Nathaniel Brown corner to restore Germany’s lead before halftime.
Moments later, Nmecha won a penalty after being brought down by former Bundesliga midfielder Riechedly Bazoer. Kai Havertz stepped up confidently and converted from the spot deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 3-1.
Any hopes of a Curaçao comeback disappeared immediately after the restart.
Jamal Musiala capped another impressive performance by scoring Germany’s fourth goal just two minutes into the second half, rewarding his outstanding display filled with clever dribbling and attacking creativity.
Germany continued to dominate proceedings as Nathaniel Brown added a fifth goal in the 68th minute before substitute Deniz Undav made an immediate impact.
Undav not only scored Germany’s sixth goal in the 78th minute but also contributed two assists in a standout cameo performance that further strengthened his case for a larger role in the tournament.
Havertz completed the rout in the 88th minute with his second goal of the evening, sealing a comprehensive 7-1 victory.
While the scoreline reflected Germany’s overwhelming superiority, Curaçao can take pride in achieving a historic milestone during their World Cup debut.
Germany sit atop their group after the opening round of matches and will look to maintain momentum in their upcoming fixtures as they pursue another deep World Cup run.
For Curaçao, the focus now shifts to regrouping and building on the positives from their historic first appearance on football’s biggest stage.
