Croatia battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their second FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L fixture at BMO Field, Toronto.
Following England’s goalless draw against Ghana earlier in the day, both Croatia and Panama knew victory would significantly strengthen their qualification hopes. Croatia ultimately capitalised, while Panama became the latest nation to be eliminated from the tournament.
Croatia marked a special occasion as midfield maestro Luka Modrić made his 200th international appearance, while José Fajardo spearheaded Panama’s attack.
Despite being ranked considerably lower than their European opponents, Panama showed no signs of intimidation and matched Croatia throughout a competitive first half.
The Central Americans came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 23rd minute when FC Juárez winger José Luis Rodríguez broke through on goal. However, Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković produced an outstanding save before the ball rebounded off the crossbar.
Croatia also threatened before halftime through Martin Baturina, but the Como midfielder was denied by an excellent stop from Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera in the closing moments of the opening period.
Neither side could find the breakthrough as the teams went into halftime locked at 0-0.
Seeking greater attacking firepower, Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić introduced Andrej Kramarić and Ante Budimir at the start of the second half.
The substitutions paid immediate dividends. In the 56th minute, Josip Stanišić delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where Budimir arrived to calmly finish past Mosquera, handing Croatia the breakthrough they desperately needed.
Panama responded positively after conceding and pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Their best opportunity came in the 68th minute when Beşiktaş defender Amir Murillo tested Livaković twice in quick succession, but the Croatian goalkeeper produced two outstanding saves to preserve his side’s slender advantage.
Panama continued to apply pressure during the closing stages, but Croatia’s defence remained composed to secure a vital clean sheet and all three points.
The victory lifts Croatia to third place in Group L with three points, keeping qualification hopes alive heading into the final group-stage fixture.
For Panama, a second consecutive defeat officially ends their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, making them the latest nation to be eliminated from the tournament.
The decisive final round of Group L matches will take place on 28 June, with Croatia facing Ghana in a winner-takes-all encounter, while England meet Panama as the Three Lions look to secure their place in the knockout stage.
Croatia’s resilience and Dalić’s timely tactical adjustments ensured the 2018 World Cup finalists remain firmly in the hunt, setting up a high-stakes clash with Ghana for a place in the Round of 32.
