Sabah FC advanced to Quarter-Final round after beating Putrajaya Athletic FC scoring 3-0 in the Unifi Piala Malaysia 2024/25 round of 16 second leg at KLFA Stadium, Cheras.
Sabah FC started aggressively, with Joao Pedro missing an early chance in the 13th minute and Telmo Castanheira heading over the bar shortly after. Despite their dominance, the first half ended goalless as Putrajaya Athletic’s defense held firm.
The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review awarded Sabah a penalty after a foul on Farhan Roslan by Abdul Latiff Suhaimi. Darren Lok stepped up confidently, converting the spot-kick to put Sabah ahead.
Stuart Wilkin doubled the lead in the 72nd minute with a thunderous strike that left goalkeeper Muhammad Syakir Danial Ma’Amal Hajri helpless.
After several missed opportunities, Joao Pedro finally found the back of the net in the 80th minute, sealing the victory with Sabah’s third goal. Pedro had a chance to further extend the lead just three minutes later but saw his second penalty saved by Syakir, with Wilkin’s rebound striking the post.
The result, coupled with a commanding 4-0 win in the first leg, gave the “Badak” squad a comprehensive 7-0 aggregate victory.
Sabah FC now await the outcome of the tie between Penang FC and Kuching City FC, with Kuching City holding a slender 1-0 aggregate advantage.
