Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) took a major step towards the Malaysia FA Cup quarter-finals after defeating Liga A1 Semi-Pro side UM Damansara United 4-1 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday.
The defending champions dominated proceedings for long periods, with Jairo da Silva and Manuel Hidalgo leading the Southern Tigers’ attack.
The result gives JDT a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg as they continue their campaign to defend the FA Cup crown.
JDT immediately imposed their authority on the match. The hosts were awarded a penalty after just five minutes, and Brazilian attacker Jairo da Silva stepped up to take responsibility.
He calmly converted from the spot to give JDT an early 1-0 lead. The opening goal immediately put UM Damansara under pressure as JDT continued to control possession and dictate the tempo.
JDT doubled their advantage in the 29th minute when the club’s latest signing, announced just one day earlier, found the back of the net.
The newcomer wasted little time making an impact and helped JDT extend their control over the game.
UM Damansara attempted to respond with several dangerous attacks towards the end of the first half, but JDT’s defensive organisation prevented the visitors from reducing the deficit.
JDT increased their lead again in the 42nd minute. Manuel Hidalgo found the net to make it 3-0, putting the Southern Tigers firmly in control before the break.
UM Damansara were unable to find a way through as JDT went into half-time with a three-goal advantage.
The second half began in similar fashion, with JDT immediately returning to the attack.
Their pressure paid off again in the 54th minute when Hidalgo struck for his second goal of the night. JDT 4-0 UM Damansara.
The Malaysia international’s performance further highlighted his growing influence within the Southern Tigers squad.
Despite the four-goal deficit, UM Damansara continued to fight until the final whistle.
Their persistence was rewarded during second-half stoppage time when Amirul Akmal scored a consolation goal.
The late strike gave the visitors something to take into the second leg, but JDT remained firmly in control of the tie.
The final whistle confirmed a 4-1 victory for JDT.
The defending champions now hold a significant three-goal advantage heading into the return fixture.
For UM Damansara, the task is extremely difficult, but their late goal keeps a small window of opportunity open.
JDT, meanwhile, will be confident of completing the job and booking their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
