Pohang Steelers’ preparations for their crucial AFC Champions League Elite 2024/25 match against Johor Darul Ta’zim were disrupted after fireworks were set off outside their hotel in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, late last night.
According to Sportalkorea, a South Korean sports media outlet, a group of fans ignited fireworks outside the team’s hotel from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM, causing significant disturbances to Pohang’s players and staff.
Despite hotel security, local police, and AFC officials being alerted, no major action was taken apart from police officers speaking to the individuals involved. No arrests were made, leaving Pohang’s squad to endure the commotion throughout the night.
Following the incident, South Korean media has strongly condemned the actions of JDT supporters, calling for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to take disciplinary action against the home team. Pohang officials reportedly lodged a complaint, citing the disruption as an unfair interference ahead of their decisive match.
At present, Johor Darul Ta’zim have not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. However, with a spot in the ACL Elite Round of 16 on the line, the controversy adds an extra layer of tension to an already intense showdown.
