The return of the Malaysian national team—Harimau Malaya—to a centralised training camp has sparked intense debate among fans, with many left questioning the absence of several high-profile names expected to strengthen the squad.
Supporters had hoped to see the inclusion of players such as Nacho Mendez, Bergson da Silva and Giancarlo Gallifuoco. However, their omission has created a wave of disappointment among the fanbase.
Head coach Peter Cklamovski addressed the situation, clarifying that administrative and fitness concerns were the primary reasons behind their absence.
“I was informed that their registrations could not be completed in time for this match. As a coach, it’s simple—they are not available for selection,” he explained.
Despite the setback, there is a positive outlook. Both Bergson and Gallifuoco are reportedly eager to represent Malaysia in upcoming international windows, offering hope for their future involvement.
Meanwhile, Nacho Mendez has been ruled out due to injury sustained in a recent match, further limiting selection options.
The selection of experienced figures such as Junior Eldstal has also drawn mixed reactions. However, Cklamovski stood firm, emphasising the importance of intangible qualities within the squad.
He highlighted the role of “leadership data”—a concept that goes beyond statistics—stressing that senior players are crucial in maintaining morale and stability, especially following the recent points deduction setback that impacted Malaysia’s Asian Cup qualification hopes.
As part of preparations, the national team is set to travel to Thailand for an intensive training camp. The squad will undergo internal sparring matches before heading to Vietnam for their upcoming fixture.
Amid speculation surrounding his future, Cklamovski reaffirmed his commitment to Malaysian football, even as his contract nears its end.
“I’ve fallen in love with this country. The work we’ve done over the past 12 months shows we are on the right path. Speculation is normal, but my vision is to see Malaysian football united in chasing its dreams.”
