Malaysia national team captain Dion Cools has emphasized pride, preparation, and determination ahead of Harimau Malaya’s crucial clash against Vietnam in Group F of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, the defender—who currently plays for Cerezo Osaka—highlighted the squad’s readiness after a full week of preparation and insisted that Malaysia remain fully motivated despite the challenges surrounding their qualification campaign.
Cools acknowledged the difficulty of facing Vietnam on their home turf but stressed that the Malaysian squad is ready for the challenge.
“We had a full week to prepare for this important game. We know it’s always tough against Vietnam, but the players are motivated, we’ve trained well, and we’re ready to play a good game tomorrow.”
The captain noted that the team has carefully analyzed their opponents and understands the threat posed by Vietnam’s experienced squad.
“Like every game, we respect our opponent. We analyzed them very well and we know what to expect. They have good players, so we need to be at our best to make it a difficult game for them.”
Cools has been enjoying a positive run of form in Japan with Cerezo Osaka, and he hopes to bring that momentum into the international stage with Malaysia.
“Personally things are going quite okay in Japan, so I hope I can bring my performance and experience here to help the team achieve a good result.”
The 28-year-old defender has become a key leader in the national setup, both through his performances on the pitch and his role guiding younger players within the squad.
While circumstances have made the qualification journey difficult for Malaysia, Cools insisted the team’s mentality remains unchanged.
“First and foremost, the most important thing is to win for the nation. That’s always the priority for us.”
He even expressed confidence about contributing offensively if the opportunity arises.
“As a player you always hope to score for your country. Of course I’m confident, but the most important thing is the victory for Malaysia.”
