The “City of Churches” is about to become the “City of Speed.” In a historic announcement that has sent shockwaves through the global sporting landscape, MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (SEG) and the South Australian Government have officially confirmed that the Australian Grand Prix will move to the heart of Adelaide starting in 2027.
This isn’t just a change of venue; it’s a global first. The move marks the first-ever MotoGP Grand Prix to be held on a city-centre street circuit, ending Phillip Island’s 30-year reign and fulfilling Liberty Media’s vision of an urban, festival-style spectacle.
Unveiled today, Thursday, 19 February 2026, by Premier Peter Malinauskas and MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta, the new Adelaide Street Circuit is a masterclass in modern engineering.
The Technical Breakdown:
- Length: 4.195 km
- Corners: 18 (Winding through the city heart)
- Top Speed: Projected to exceed 340 km/h
- Heritage: Built on the famous blueprint of the 1985-1995 F1 track, but with massive safety overhauls.
“This marks a major milestone in the evolution of our championship. Every element has been engineered to meet the highest safety standards, ensuring riders can race at full intensity with complete confidence in a city-centre location.” — Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer
The agreement between South Australia and MotoGP SEG is a powerhouse six-year pact, ensuring Adelaide remains the home of the Australian GP until at least 2032. The inaugural “Festival of Speed” is slated for November 2027, strategically positioned to be the jewel in the crown of the Asian/Pacific leg.
For Premier Peter Malinauskas, stealing the GP from Victoria is the ultimate victory in the national “Event War.” The Premier highlighted that this move is about more than just racing—it’s about global positioning and economic fire-power.
“We are now competing with the rest of the nation for the world’s best events—and winning,” Malinauskas declared. “Hosting the world’s first MotoGP street race gives Adelaide a unique offering that will put South Australia on the global stage.”
