Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has officially confirmed that national men’s singles ace Ng Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery following a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during the opening round of the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2025.
The 25-year-old shuttler was forced to retire mid-match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long after experiencing sharp pain in his knee. Subsequent medical scans and MRI results confirmed a torn ACL—one of the most feared injuries in an athlete’s career—which now requires surgical intervention.
Currently, Tze Yong is undergoing prehabilitation (prehab) to prepare his knee and surrounding muscles for surgery, a crucial step in ensuring better outcomes post-operation.
“This is a difficult moment for Tze Yong, but he is mentally strong and focused on the recovery process,” said Kenneth Jonassen, BAM’s Director of Singles. “Our medical and coaching teams are working closely with him to ensure he gets the best care possible. We will support him every step of the way, both on and off the court.”
Despite the heartbreaking setback, Ng Tze Yong remains upbeat and resilient in the face of adversity.
“It’s tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome,” said Tze Yong in a statement released by BAM. “I’m staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I’m fully focused on coming back stronger.”
“I want to thank BAM, the National Sports Institute (ISN), and everyone on the medical and coaching teams for their constant support and care. Thank you also to all the fans for your kind messages—it really means a lot to me.”
Ng Tze Yong has been widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s most promising men’s singles players, carrying the nation’s hopes for future glory on the international stage. His injury is a blow to Malaysia’s short-term ambitions in the category, especially with key tournaments like the World Championships and Thomas Cup on the horizon.
Nevertheless, BAM remains committed to guiding Tze Yong through every phase of his recovery. With proper rehabilitation and unwavering support, the association is confident that he will return to top form.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia has extended its full backing and best wishes to Tze Yong for a successful surgery and smooth recovery. As one of the nation’s key players, his health and return to the sport remain a top priority.
