World Champion Jorge Martin’s long-awaited return to MotoGP action at the Qatar Grand Prix ended in disaster, as the Aprilia Racing rider suffered a violent crash on Lap 14 of Sunday’s race—leaving him with multiple rib fractures and a pneumothorax, dealing a serious blow to his 2025 campaign.
The reigning titleholder was swiftly transported to the medical center after the fall, where he was initially diagnosed with chest trauma. Aprilia’s early statement confirmed that Martin was “conscious without problems with his limbs,” but tests soon revealed more serious internal injuries.
Following a CT scan, doctors discovered an increase in the pneumothorax—air trapped in the chest cavity—which required immediate medical intervention. “It will be necessary to place a drainage in aspiration. The rider will have to remain under observation for a few days in the hospital until the pneumothorax resolves,” Aprilia Racing announced.
But the damage didn’t stop there.
A full diagnostic evaluation delivered sobering news: Jorge Martin has suffered eight fractures to the right posterior costal arches (ribs one to eight) and three additional fractures on the lateral arches (ribs seven to nine). Minor pleural swelling was also reported, compounding the seriousness of the pneumothorax.
Aprilia issued a further medical bulletin on Monday morning:
“Jorge Martin spent the night at the Hamad General Hospital. There are no traumatic alterations affecting the brain, cervical spine or abdominal organs. However, Jorge will remain under close observation until the pneumothorax resolves. We will provide further updates when available.”
Team CEO Massimo Rivola addressed the situation with a solemn message:
“Performance moves to the back burner today. Our thoughts are with Jorge at this difficult time – we stand with him.”
Martin’s crash comes at a pivotal time in the season, as the paddock prepares for the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez – his home race. While his title defense now faces an uncertain road, the focus is firmly on his recovery.
