Football Association (FA) has announced Thomas Tuchel as the new head coach of the England senior men’s football team, with renowned English coach Anthony Barry as his assistant.
Tuchel, a UEFA Champions League-winning coach with Chelsea, returns to English football after an illustrious career that includes successful stints at top clubs in Germany and France. He was also named UEFA and FIFA’s coach of the year in 2021.
This appointment marks the conclusion of an extensive recruitment process that began in July following England’s run to the UEFA EURO 2024 final. FA CEO Mark Bullingham and men’s technical director John McDermott led the confidential search, interviewing several candidates before selecting Tuchel, who signed an 18-month contract.
Tuchel will officially begin his role on January 1, 2025, in preparation for England’s qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. He brings a wealth of experience, having won league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as well as the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund. His assistant, Anthony Barry, brings significant international experience, having worked with Belgium, Portugal, and the Republic of Ireland, and previously collaborated with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern.
Interim coach Lee Carsley will remain in charge until the conclusion of England’s UEFA Nations League campaign before returning to lead the U21 squad in their defense of the UEFA U21 EURO title.
Tuchel expressed his pride and excitement at the opportunity to lead England, calling it a “huge privilege” and highlighting the talent in the current squad. Barry echoed these sentiments, adding that working with the national team is the pinnacle for any Englishman in football.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham praised Tuchel as one of the best coaches in the world and emphasized that his appointment, along with Barry, gives England the best chance to win a major tournament.
