The president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, has officially stepped down from his position, announcing his resignation during a meeting with key representatives of Italian football at the federation’s headquarters in Rome.
The announcement marks a significant moment for Italian football governance, with an Extraordinary Electoral Assembly scheduled for June 22 to determine the federation’s next leadership.
During the meeting, Gravina informed leaders from several football bodies—including the heads of Italy’s professional leagues and associations—that he had submitted his resignation from the role he had held since February 2025.
The upcoming election aims to ensure a smooth transition of governance while allowing the federation to complete key administrative procedures—particularly club registrations for upcoming professional league seasons.
Gravina also confirmed that he will appear before the Culture, Science and Education Commission of the Italian Chamber of Deputies on April 8 to present a detailed report on the current state of Italian football.
The hearing will provide a platform for Gravina to outline both the strengths and structural challenges facing the sport in Italy, including issues related to governance, financial sustainability and regulatory differences between professional and amateur football.
During the meeting, Gravina expressed regret over the misinterpretation of his recent remarks regarding the differences between amateur and professional sports structures.
He stressed that his comments were not intended to diminish any sporting discipline, but rather to highlight the distinct regulatory frameworks governing professional football clubs compared to amateur organizations.
Professional clubs, he explained, operate under complex national and international legislation, including corporate structures and financial regulations that differ significantly from those applied to amateur teams.
