Malaysia’s mixed doubles campaign has suffered a significant setback after the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that Toh Ee Wei sustained a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee, forcing her and partner Chen Tang Jie to withdraw from this week’s Indonesia Open 2026.
The injury comes as a major blow to one of Malaysia’s leading mixed doubles partnerships, who had been building strong momentum on the BWF World Tour and were among the title contenders heading into the prestigious Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta.
Ee Wei’s injury was initially sustained during the quarter-final clash at the Singapore Open last week. The Malaysian pair had been on course for a semi-final berth against India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto, leading 18-16 in the opening game before being forced to retire from the match.
Subsequent medical examinations and MRI scans confirmed a partial ACL tear in her left knee, raising immediate concerns over her competitive schedule and long-term recovery.
Following the diagnosis, BAM announced that the pair would not participate in the Indonesia Open, prioritising Ee Wei’s health and rehabilitation.
BAM also revealed that Ee Wei will undergo a follow-up MRI assessment next Friday, allowing the national federation’s medical team to gain a clearer understanding of the severity of the injury and determine the most suitable treatment pathway.
The results of the upcoming assessment will play a crucial role in deciding whether conservative rehabilitation or further medical intervention will be required.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring a safe and complete recovery for the 24-year-old shuttler.
The withdrawal is a significant disappointment for Malaysian badminton fans, particularly given the pair’s strong performances throughout the season.
Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have established themselves among the world’s elite mixed doubles combinations, consistently challenging the top-ranked pairs on the international circuit. Their aggressive attacking style, tactical versatility, and growing chemistry have made them one of Malaysia’s strongest medal prospects across major tournaments.
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate, with the Indonesia Open representing one of the most important stops on the BWF calendar ahead of the second half of the season.
For Chen Tang Jie, the setback also halts a period of encouraging form. During the Singapore Open quarter-final, Tang Jie had immediately urged his partner to prioritize her health after noticing her discomfort on court.
His support reflected the close partnership that has helped propel the duo into contention at the sport’s highest level.
With Ee Wei now facing a rehabilitation period, Malaysia’s mixed doubles department will be anxiously awaiting positive news from next week’s medical evaluation.
