Chanathip Songkrasin, the star midfielder of BG Pathum United, has set his sights on winning the ASEAN Club Championship, also known as the Shopee Cup, for the 2024/25 season.
BG Pathum United qualified for the tournament as the champions of the 2023/24 Thai League Cup.
Chanathip, who has a storied career, is no stranger to success. He has played a pivotal role in leading Thailand to three AFF Championship titles, won the Thai League 1 title with Muangthong United in 2016, and has lifted the Thai League Cup with three different clubs, most recently with BG Pathum United in June. His remarkable performances in Japan with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo led to a record-breaking domestic transfer to Kawasaki Frontale for around USD 3.8 million.
Despite his numerous accolades, Chanathip remains driven and eager for more success. Chanathip sees the Shopee Cup as not just another opportunity to add to his trophy collection, but as a platform to represent Thailand and showcase the high standards of the Thai League on an international stage.
“I want to win the Shopee Cup,” Chanathip said in an interview with ASEAN United FC.
“I feel very excited to compete in it. This is a great chance for us to test ourselves against other teams in the Southeast Asian region.”
He emphasized that the tournament is about more than just individual glory. “It’s not just about me going to show my talents at the Shopee Cup and winning another trophy,” he added. “We BGPU players want to represent Thailand and the Thai League in this tournament. It’s time for us to show everyone we have a high standard and represent our nation well.”
BG Pathum United is one of two Thai clubs participating in the inaugural ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup. They are placed in Group A, alongside Malaysia’s Terengganu FC, Vietnam’s Đông Á Thanh Hóa FC, Indonesia’s PSM Makassar, Cambodia’s Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC, and Myanmar’s Shan United FC.
