Malaysia enjoyed a productive opening day at the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open 2026 in Sydney, with several shuttlers advancing to the Round of 16, highlighted by an impressive victory from Justin Hoh, who emerged as the country’s standout performer in the men’s singles competition.
The 22-year-old Malaysian battled past India’s Kiran George in a hard-fought three-game encounter at the Quaycentre, demonstrating resilience and composure to secure a 21-19, 14-21, 21-15 victory.
After narrowly taking the opening game, Justin saw his opponent respond strongly in the second. However, the Malaysian regained control in the decider, producing a mature display to book his place in the next round and continue his encouraging run on the BWF World Tour.
With several Malaysian men’s singles players facing stern challenges in Sydney, Justin’s victory ensured the Jalur Gemilang remains represented in the men’s singles draw.
His determination under pressure was evident throughout the 62-minute battle, particularly in the third game where he maintained his attacking intensity and limited unforced errors against the experienced Indian.
The result positions Justin as one of Malaysia’s key hopes heading into the latter stages of the tournament.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles department also enjoyed an excellent day at the office.
Loo Bing Kun and Aqilah Maisarah produced one of the most dominant performances of the round, dismantling Germany’s Calvin Devereux and Desiree Toepffer 21-1, 21-3 in a one-sided affair.
The Malaysian pair completely controlled the match from start to finish, allowing their opponents just four points across two games in a statement victory.
Meanwhile, Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Lai Pei Jing comfortably defeated Australia’s Michael Owen and Gronya Somerville 21-17, 21-14 to progress safely into the Round of 16.
Another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin, also advanced after overcoming Australia’s Andika Ramadiansyah and Nozomi Shimizu 21-15, 21-16.
In women’s singles, Wong Ling Ching showed tremendous fighting spirit to edge India’s Aakarshi Kashyap in a thrilling three-game contest.
After winning the first game 21-19 and dropping the second 19-21, Wong held her nerve in a tense decider to clinch a 22-20 victory and move into the next round.
Her perseverance under pressure provided another positive result for the Malaysian contingent.
There was disappointment for Eogene Ewe, who came close to a notable upset against Hong Kong’s eighth seed Lee Cheuk Yiu.
Eogene captured the opening game 21-18 but was unable to maintain his momentum as Lee fought back to claim the match 18-21, 21-10, 21-15.
Despite the defeat, Eogene delivered a competitive performance against one of the tournament’s seeded players.
