Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, displayed grit and maturity as they powered into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after a tense three-game showdown in Sydney on Thursday.
Seeded second, the national professionals were forced into an early reality check when Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng–Yang Po Han snatched the first set 23–21. Despite racing ahead early, Sze Fei–Izzuddin lost momentum midway through, allowing their opponents to turn the tables in a tight finish
Refusing to let nerves dictate the match, the Malaysian pair regrouped. Their polished combinations, sharper net interceptions and increased attacking pressure saw them take the second set 21–17, restoring belief and shifting momentum back in their favour.
The decider was a completely different story. Sze Fei–Izzuddin surged ahead from the first rally, suffocating the Taiwanese pair with superior pace, tighter defense, and relentless attacking play. They closed out the match emphatically, 21–10, securing victory in just under an hour.
The win arrives at a crucial moment as the Malaysians aim for a deep run in Sydney to offset the disappointment of missing qualification for the 2025 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou next month.
It was an all-Malaysian clash as Choi Sol Gyu–Goh V Shem defeated Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King in straight sets 21–19, 21–13. The veteran pairing used their experience to outmaneuver the younger duo.
Malaysia’s third seeds Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun delivered a confident performance to dispatch Denmark’s Christian F. Kjær–Rasmus Kjær 21–11, 21–16. Their precise attacking rhythm continues to make them strong contenders for the title.
In the Women’s Singles, Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching saw her impressive run come to an end after losing to seventh seed Michelle Li of Canada. The Malaysian struggled to match Li’s pace and consistency, going down 16–21, 11–21.
Mixed doubles top seeds Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei maintained their winning form, defeating Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng–Jheng Yu Chieh 21–16, 21–14. The Malaysians’ tactical discipline and sharp rotation proved too much for their opponents.
In men’s singles, Aidil Sholeh bowed out after losing 15–21, 12–21 to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka. Despite flashes of creativity, Aidil struggled to break Tanaka’s defensive structure.
Malaysia’s Choong Hon Jian–Haikal Nazri put up a fierce fight but eventually fell to Indonesia’s Raymond Indra–Nikolaus Joaquin 21–18, 17–21, 15–21. After a strong opening game, the Malaysians couldn’t maintain their momentum in the closing stages.
