Neymar terminated Al Hilal by Mutual Consent

Brazilian superstar Neymar has officially ended his stint with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal after his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

The 32-year-old joined Al-Hilal in August 2023 for €90 million (£77.6 million) but struggled to make an impact due to recurring injuries, managing just seven appearances for the club.

Neymar’s move to Al-Hilal was touted as a new chapter in his illustrious career. However, his time at the club was plagued by injuries, including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament sustained during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023. This setback sidelined him for much of the season, and he has only featured twice this campaign, with his last appearance as a substitute in November.

Despite signing a lucrative two-year contract reportedly worth €150 million (£129.2 million) annually, Neymar leaves Al-Hilal with seven months remaining on his deal.

In a statement, Al-Hilal expressed gratitude for Neymar’s contributions:

“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career at Al-Hilal and wishes the player success in his future endeavors.”

Speculation is rife that Neymar could make a sentimental return to Santos, the club where his professional journey began. Having come through Santos’ youth academy, Neymar scored 136 goals in 225 games before making a high-profile move to Barcelona in 2013.

Neymar’s career has been nothing short of remarkable. After joining Barcelona, he won two La Liga titles, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup during his four-season stay. His record-breaking €222 million (£200 million) transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 remains the most expensive in football history.

At PSG, Neymar claimed five Ligue 1 titles, further cementing his reputation as one of the most talented players of his generation. During his time in Saudi Arabia, he achieved another milestone by surpassing Pelé to become Brazil’s all-time leading male goalscorer, with 78 international goals.

While Neymar’s time at Al-Hilal did not pan out as hoped, the Brazilian forward remains a revered figure in football. His injuries have limited his contributions on the pitch in recent years, but his skill, flair, and goal-scoring ability continue to make him a coveted player.
