Ecuador produced one of the most memorable comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, fighting back from an early deficit to defeat already-qualified Germany 2-1 and book their place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Despite falling behind after just two minutes, Ecuador showed remarkable resilience to overturn the score through Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata, securing four points from three Group E matches—enough to advance to the knockout rounds.
Germany, meanwhile, had already guaranteed top spot in the group before kick-off and remained group winners despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
The Germans wasted no time asserting themselves as Leroy Sané fired a clinical finish into the bottom corner in the second minute after an excellent through ball from Florian Wirtz.
The goal, however, sparked immediate controversy. Ecuadorian players protested that Aleksandar Pavlović had challenged Pedro Vite with a high boot moments before Germany regained possession, but American referee Tori Penso and the VAR team allowed the goal to stand.
Ecuador quickly recovered from the early setback. In the ninth minute, Pedro Vite provided the assist as Nilson Angulo unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area that squeezed past Manuel Neuer into the bottom corner, giving Ecuador their first goal of the 2026 World Cup and restoring parity at 1-1.
The remainder of the opening half remained evenly contested, with both sides creating opportunities but unable to find another breakthrough before halftime.
Germany nearly regained the lead early in the second half when referee Penso awarded a penalty after Joel Ordóñez challenged Kai Havertz inside the box.
However, following a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned after officials ruled that Sané had fouled Pedro Vite earlier in the attacking sequence, nullifying the entire move.
The reversal proved to be one of the game’s defining moments.
As the match entered its final quarter, Germany rotated several key players—including captain Joshua Kimmich, Kai Havertz, and Felix Nmecha—with an eye on the knockout rounds.
Ecuador, meanwhile, continued searching for a decisive goal.
That breakthrough arrived in the 77th minute when substitute Kevin Rodríguez flicked on a corner kick, allowing Gonzalo Plata to react quickest inside the six-yard box and fire past Neuer from close range to complete a sensational turnaround.
Germany pressed late for an equaliser but were unable to breach Ecuador’s disciplined defence.
The victory sees Ecuador finish third in Group E with four points, but a superior goal difference over Bosnia and Herzegovina from Group B ensured La Tri secured one of the eight qualification spots reserved for the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
For Germany, the defeat does little damage, as Julian Nagelsmann’s side had already confirmed first place in the group and now turn their focus to the Round of 32.
Ecuador, meanwhile, leave the group stage with renewed belief after producing one of the tournament’s biggest comeback victories, proving they are capable of challenging anyone as the knockout rounds begin.
