Austria secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after battling to a dramatic 3-3 draw against Algeria in their final Group J fixture at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City.
The entertaining result was enough for Austria to finish as group runners-up, while Algeria also advanced as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Austria completed the group stage unbeaten with five points, matching Algeria’s tally before edging ahead on goal difference to claim second place behind Argentina, who maintained a perfect record with a 3-1 victory over Jordan.
Knowing a positive result would be enough to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive, Austria produced another disciplined display despite being tested throughout by an inspired Algerian side.
Captain David Alaba played a key role in Austria’s opening goal, delivering a superb long pass that released Marko Arnautović, who calmly finished in the 28th minute after Algeria’s offside trap failed to hold.
Although Algeria responded before half-time through Rafik Belghali, Austria regained control 10 minutes after the restart when Marcel Sabitzer escaped his marker and fired home from inside the penalty area to restore the European side’s advantage.
Algeria refused to surrender as captain Riyad Mahrez produced a captain’s performance, scoring twice in the second half to keep his nation’s qualification hopes alive.
His first goal arrived shortly after the hour mark following an assist from Houssem Aouar, before the former Manchester City winger struck again in stoppage time to give Algeria a dramatic 3-2 lead.
For a brief moment, Algeria looked set to leapfrog Austria into second place, while the result would also have opened the door for Iran to advance among the best third-placed teams.
However, Austria responded immediately. Deep into added time, substitute Sasa Kalajdzic rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser, rescuing a 3-3 draw that guaranteed Austria second place in Group J.
The late goal proved decisive not only for Austria but also for the tournament picture, as it pushed Algeria back into third place and eliminated Iran’s hopes of progressing.
Austria now advance to the Round of 32 with renewed confidence after showing resilience in a high-pressure encounter, while Algeria also celebrate qualification after finishing among the tournament’s strongest third-placed teams.
Elsewhere in Group J, Argentina completed a flawless group-stage campaign by defeating Jordan 3-1 despite making nine changes to their starting lineup.
Goals from Giovani Lo Celso, Lautaro Martínez and Lionel Messi secured maximum points for the reigning world champions, with Messi extending his remarkable record by scoring in a seventh consecutive FIFA World Cup match, dating back to the 2022 tournament.
Jordan’s consolation came through substitute Mousa Al-Taamari, but it was not enough to prevent the tournament debutants from finishing bottom of the group without a point.
Austria will now prepare for a blockbuster Round of 32 clash against Spain, while Algeria face Switzerland as both nations continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey.
