Egypt secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw over 120 minutes in a dramatic knockout encounter.
The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot to eliminate the Socceroos after two Australian defenders failed to convert in the decisive shootout.
Australia fielded a physically imposing backline led by towering defenders Harry Souttar, Alessandro Circati, and Lucas Herrington, hoping to neutralise Egypt’s dangerous attacking duo of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
Despite Australia’s aerial strength, it was Egypt who struck first in the 13th minute. Winger Emam Ashour rose highest to meet a cross and powered a header beyond the Australian goalkeeper, giving the African side an early 1-0 advantage.
Egypt’s disciplined defensive display helped preserve their lead through the remainder of the first half, limiting Australia’s attacking opportunities.
The Socceroos emerged with greater urgency after halftime and found their equaliser in the 55th minute.
A dangerous free-kick delivered by Aiden O’Neill forced Egypt defender Mohamed Hany into an unfortunate own goal, as his attempted clearance flew into his own net to make it 1-1.
Both sides continued to search for a winner during normal time, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough, sending the contest into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced an intense tactical battle, with both teams creating opportunities while remaining cautious not to concede.
Australia pressed for a late winner, while Egypt looked dangerous on the counterattack through Salah and Marmoush, but the scoreline remained unchanged after 120 minutes.
The tie was ultimately settled by a penalty shootout. Australia’s hopes were dashed when Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington both failed to convert their spot-kicks, and Egypt produced a composed performance from the penalty spot, converting four of their attempts to seal a 4-2 shootout victory.
The victory keeps Egypt’s FIFA World Cup dream alive as the African giants advance to the last 16 after surviving one of the tournament’s toughest knockout battles.
For Australia, the defeat brings an end to their World Cup journey despite an impressive fightback after falling behind early in the contest.
Egypt will now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will aim to build on their resilience and continue their pursuit of a historic run at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
