Korea Football Association (KFA) has issued a public apology to supporters following South Korea’s disappointing elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026, while confirming that preparations have already begun for the appointment of a new national team head coach.
In a statement released after the Taegeuk Warriors failed to progress beyond the group stage, the KFA accepted responsibility for the team’s underwhelming campaign and pledged to rebuild ahead of the next major international tournaments.
Addressing football supporters across the country, the federation acknowledged that the team’s performances fell well short of expectations.
“To all football fans who have continued to care for and support Korean football, we sincerely apologise for disappointing you with a result that fell far below expectations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
The KFA said it would treat the tournament as an opportunity for reflection and use the setback as motivation to reshape the future of Korean football.
“We will use this failure as a lesson and prepare for the future of Korean football through deep reflection and self-examination.”
The federation also promised to listen carefully to criticism from supporters while working to restore confidence in the national team.
“We humbly accept all criticism and will continue striving to build a better future for Korean football.”
The KFA also addressed recent media reports surrounding the national team’s World Cup campaign, denying claims based on unverified information.
According to the federation, several reports circulating in recent days were based on speculation rather than fact.
“We also wish to clarify that recent speculative reports based on unverified information are completely false.”
The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity and core values of football while rebuilding public trust.
Attention has already turned toward appointing South Korea’s next national team manager.
The KFA confirmed that its National Team Strengthening Committee met on 3 July to begin discussions regarding the coaching vacancy and evaluate multiple directions for the team’s future.
The committee stressed that maintaining stability within the national team remains the top priority as preparations begin for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup.
According to the KFA, further meetings will be held to ensure there is no disruption to the national team’s schedule, including international fixtures later this year.
In addition to the coaching search, the federation also provided an update regarding its presidential election.
Under the KFA’s constitution, a new election must be held within 60 days whenever the presidency becomes vacant.
The federation added that the election process must comply not only with its own statutes but also with the regulations of FIFA and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee to ensure full governance compliance.
Following an early World Cup exit that disappointed supporters across the nation, South Korea’s focus now shifts toward rebuilding ahead of the AFC Asian Cup.
With both a new head coach and new football leadership set to shape the next chapter, the coming weeks are expected to be pivotal as Korean football looks to recover from one of its most disappointing World Cup campaigns in recent years.
