Singapore national football team has cancelled their scheduled international friendly against the Faroe Islands that was set to take place in Dubai on March 26, following escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The decision was confirmed by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) on Wednesday after consultations with relevant stakeholders and football authorities.
According to FAS, the cancellation was made after a thorough evaluation of the evolving geopolitical situation and its potential impact on travel and match logistics.
“The decision was made following a careful assessment of the evolving situation in the Middle East and its potential implications for travel and match operations,” FAS said in an official statement.
“The safety and well-being of our players, coaching staff, officials and supporters remain our foremost priority.”
Despite the cancellation of the friendly, the Singapore squad will continue preparations through a centralised training programme in Singapore ahead of their final group-stage match in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.
Singapore is scheduled to face Bangladesh on March 31 at the Singapore National Stadium, Kallang.
Singapore has already confirmed its place in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 after a strong qualifying campaign that saw it top its group with 11 points, including a crucial victory over the Hong Kong national football team in November last year.
Under tournament rules, head-to-head results take precedence over goal difference, meaning Singapore’s qualification is mathematically secured regardless of results on the final matchday.
On that same day, Hong Kong will travel to face India while Singapore hosts Bangladesh.
The cancelled friendly would have marked a rare meeting with European opposition for Singapore.
Their last senior international clash against a UEFA member nation came in 2012, when they played out a 2–2 draw with the Azerbaijan.
