Malaysia’s men’s doubles department once again emerged as the nation’s strongest weapon after a series of impressive victories powered the home contingent into the Round of 16 of the Perodua Malaysia Masters 2026 on Tuesday.
Leading the charge at Axiata Arena were world No. 3 pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who delivered a composed straight-games performance to overcome Indonesia’s Muhammad Putra Erwiansyah-Bagas Maulana 21-16, 21-14 in the men’s doubles Round of 32.
The Malaysian duo looked sharp from the opening rally, controlling the tempo with aggressive net play and rapid attacking transitions to secure their place in the second round in convincing fashion.
National top pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were also pushed hard before surviving a stern test from Singapore’s Wesley Koh-Junsuke Kubo. After dropping the opening game 19-21, the former world champions responded brilliantly to dominate the next two games 21-10, 21-12 and keep Malaysia’s title hopes alive on home soil.
Another Malaysian success story came through Chia Wei Jie-Teo Ee Yi, who comfortably defeated Canada’s Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman 21-18, 21-15 to advance.
Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai added another positive result for the hosts after battling past Taiwan’s Lai Po Yu-Tsai Fu Cheng 17-21, 21-19, 21-16 in a hard-fought three-game encounter filled with momentum swings.
Fifth seeds Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King also marched into the last 16 after overcoming Taiwan’s He Zhi-Wei-Huang Jui-Hsuan 21-19, 15-21, 21-11 in another intense three-set battle.
Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong ensured Malaysia’s excellent day in the men’s doubles continued after cruising past fourth seeds Lee Jhe-Huei-Yang Po-Hsuan of Taiwan 21-14, 21-14 in one of the standout victories of the round.
However, it was disappointment in the women’s doubles department as Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng fell 16-21, 17-21 to Taiwan’s Chen Yan Fei-Sun Liang Ching, while Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting were edged out by Hsieh Yi En-Teng Chun Hsun 15-21, 20-22 despite a spirited fightback in the second game.
Malaysia also suffered another setback in the men’s doubles when Lwi Sheng Hao-Ong Yew Sin were defeated 13-21, 14-21 by Taiwan’s Chen Zhi Ray-Lin Yu Chieh.
Despite the mixed results, Malaysia’s strong representation in the men’s doubles Round of 16 keeps hopes alive for a deep run at the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament in Kuala Lumpur, with several home pairs now emerging as genuine contenders for the title.
