Aprilia “We Know Aragon is a Marc Track”

With a mere 56 points blanketing the top six riders and ten rounds remaining, the battle for the final MotoGP World Championship of the 1000cc era is shaping up to be an all-time classic. As the paddock prepares for the upcoming round at MotorLand Aragón, Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola believes the circuit will act as the ultimate litmus test for title viability.

If the recent pattern continues, the momentum is expected to violently swing between the Aprilia and Ducati camps, heavily dictated by circuit suitability and, crucially, rider physical conditioning.

Aprilia currently holds the high ground, but the Ducati counterattack is looming. With 370 points still on the table across the remaining rounds, the margin for error is non-existent. The upcoming weekend transitions the championship fight from a game of points calculation to a grueling test of sheer physical and technical supremacy.

As the grid heads to Aragón, all eyes inevitably turn to the reigning nine-time world champion. From establishing a blistering 1.29:391 lap record pace early on at the Buriram pre-season tests to fiercely trading paint at the front of the pack with relentless rivals like Pedro this season, Marc Marquez has been an absolute force.

He is especially lethal at anti-clockwise, stop-and-go layouts, securing dominant victories at Balaton Park and the Sachsenring. These specific track profiles perfectly mask his current right-shoulder limitations while amplifying his legendary, aggressive riding style.

Next weekend’s battleground is the definition of a “Marquez circuit.” The Spaniard is a seven-time grand prix winner at Aragón and remains undefeated in all four of his starts there aboard Ducati machinery—sweeping the track with Gresini in 2024 and repeating the feat with the factory Lenovo squad last year.

“We know that Aragon is a Marc track,” acknowledged Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola via Crash Net. “There are still 370 points on the table, but Aragon can give us an idea of who will be the real title contenders for the future.”

Aprilia historically struggled during the second half of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, particularly during the grueling non-European flyaway rounds. However, late-season victories from Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez last year broke that trend, albeit with Marquez sidelined at the time due to injury.

Rivola remains focused on immediate data and rider feedback over historical trends, pointing to garage health as the critical performance metric moving into the back half of the calendar.

“We can say as a statistic that in the past we were bad in the second part and last year we were quite strong. I hope that last year makes a better statistic [for the future] than the previous ones,” Rivola noted.

“I don’t really think that the first or second part changed really. I think what matters most is how the riders feel physically, and finally we start having Jorge [Martin] in good shape, and Marco [Bezzecchi] will have one more week to recover now before Aragon.”

As the lights prepare to go out at MotorLand Aragón, whether the Aprilia squad can withstand the incoming Marquez onslaught will heavily dictate the trajectory of this historic 1000cc farewell season.
