The Utilita Arena witnessed a day of intense drama and heartbreak as the YONEX All England 2026 entered its crucial Round of 16 phase on Thursday, March 5.
It was a true test of fire for the Malaysian contingent, with a mix of spectacular victories and tough eliminations against world-class opposition.
Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah [2] put on an absolute masterclass in the Women’s Doubles. The duo easily dispatched South Korea’s Lee Seo Jin and Lee Yeon Woo in straight sets, 21-14, 21-14, sending a strong message to the rest of the field.
The spotlight of the night fell on the Men’s Doubles clash between national heavyweights and 2nd seeds Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik and their rising compatriots Arif Junaidi / Yap Roy King. In a match that showcased the depth of Malaysian badminton, Aaron and Wooi Yik took the first set 21-15, only for Arif and Roy King to fight back brilliantly to steal the second 21-18.
However, the experience of the 2nd seeds ultimately prevailed in a tense decider, as Aaron and Wooi Yik closed out the match 21-18, keeping their title hopes alive.
Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun [6] also stamped their authority, taking down the tricky Chinese Taipei pair of Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi-Lin with a commanding 21-14, 21-18 victory.
Unfortunately, the fairy tale ended for our young giant-killers, Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai. Following their massive upset in the previous round, the youngsters put up a valiant fight but were edged out by China’s Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi in a tight two-setter, 19-21, 17-21.
In the Men’s Singles, Leong Jun Hao found his campaign cut short by Japan’s Koki Watanabe, struggling to find his rhythm and bowing out 9-21, 13-21.
The day also saw tough exits for Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin [8], who lost a narrow 21-23, 16-21 battle to Indonesia’s Ardianto and Hidayat, while Mixed Doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai fell to China’s 2nd seeds, Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin, 16-21, 18-21.
