Belgium produced a clinical display to defeat co-hosts United States 4-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, booking a blockbuster quarter-final showdown against Spain while ending the tournament hopes of the final remaining host nation.
Belgium asserted control from the opening whistle and took the lead after just nine minutes when De Ketelaere finished off a well-worked attacking move.
The United States briefly reignited hopes of a comeback when Malik Tillman levelled the score in the 31st minute, but Belgium responded almost immediately.
Only four minutes later, De Ketelaere struck again to restore Belgium’s advantage, giving the European side a deserved 2-1 lead at halftime.
Belgium never allowed the hosts back into the contest after the restart.
Substitute Hans Vanaken capitalised on a costly mistake by American goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 57th minute, extending Belgium’s lead to two goals.
Another substitute, Romelu Lukaku, completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, calmly finishing to secure a commanding 4-1 victory.
Lukaku’s goal also saw the Belgian striker achieve two remarkable World Cup milestones. The first Belgian player to score three or more goals in multiple FIFA World Cup editions (2018 and 2026), and The first player in World Cup history to score as a substitute in four different tournament matches.
The record further cements Lukaku’s status as one of Belgium’s greatest-ever international forwards.
The defeat capped a turbulent period for the United States, whose participation in the Round of 16 had already attracted global attention.
Ahead of the match, FIFA’s decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban issued to striker Folarin Balogun following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina generated widespread controversy.
Balogun started against Belgium after FIFA temporarily suspended his sanction, despite strong objections from the Belgian Football Association, whose appeal was later rejected.
The ruling also prompted criticism from UEFA, which described FIFA’s decision as an unprecedented threat to the integrity of football.
However, the off-field debate ultimately had little impact on the outcome, as Belgium outclassed the hosts throughout the contest.
Belgium’s reward is a mouthwatering quarter-final clash against European champions Spain, who dramatically eliminated Portugal thanks to Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time winner.
With both nations boasting impressive attacking quality and championship ambitions, Friday’s showdown in Inglewood, California, promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.
For the United States, meanwhile, the defeat ends their home World Cup campaign, joining fellow hosts Mexico and Canada in exiting before the last eight and bringing the curtain down on North America’s challenge for global football’s biggest prize.
