Iran kept their unbeaten record intact at the FIFA World Cup 2026, but a dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt left Team Melli anxiously awaiting the outcome of other groups to determine whether they will advance to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Despite avoiding defeat throughout the group stage, Iran finished third in Group G with three points, while Belgium topped the standings with five points after thrashing New Zealand 5-1. Egypt also progressed automatically as runners-up after collecting five points.
Needing victory to boost their qualification hopes, Iran made two changes to the side that drew with Belgium, introducing Milad Mohammadi and Mohammad Ghorbani. Egypt, meanwhile, rotated heavily with four changes under head coach Hossam Hassan.
The match got off to a nightmare start for Iran. Inside five minutes, a defensive lapse allowed Mohamed Salah to initiate a dangerous move before Mahmoud Saber capitalised on a loose ball, squeezing a low effort through the legs of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to hand Egypt a 1-0 lead.
Iran were handed a golden opportunity to equalise just minutes later when Polish referee Szymon Marciniak awarded a penalty after Mohamed Abdelmonem caught Mehdi Taremi with his studs inside the penalty area.
However, Taremi failed to convert from the spot as Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier guessed correctly to make an excellent save, ending Iran’s perfect World Cup penalty record dating back to previous tournaments.
The disappointment lasted only a few minutes. Milad Mohammadi’s powerful effort was parried by Shobier, but Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickest at the far post to slot home the rebound in the 15th minute and restore parity.
The remainder of the opening half became a tactical battle, with both teams creating few clear-cut opportunities. Iran nearly took the lead before the interval, but Shoja Khalilzadeh was unable to capitalise on a poor punch from Shobier following a long throw.
VAR Heartbreak Denies Historic Winner
Iran switched to a back four after halftime and continued searching for the decisive goal.
Egypt created dangerous moments through Salah and Omar Marmoush, but Beiranvand produced several important saves to keep the score level.
As the match entered stoppage time, Iran believed they had completed an unforgettable comeback.
A dangerous free-kick from Rezaeian caused chaos inside the Egyptian penalty area before Khalilzadeh bundled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations from the Iranian bench and supporters.
The celebrations were short-lived. Following a VAR review, referee Marciniak ruled the defender offside, cancelling what would have been Iran’s historic match-winning goal and a potential first-ever qualification to the World Cup knockout stage.
Iran continued pressing until the final whistle but were unable to find another breakthrough.
Although victory slipped away in heartbreaking fashion, Iran completed the group stage unbeaten with three consecutive draws against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.
Iran currently remain in contention for one of the best third-placed qualification spots, with their fate dependent on results elsewhere across the remaining groups.
Should qualification be secured, midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi will miss the Round of 32 after receiving a yellow card that triggers suspension.
While Team Melli’s World Cup future remains uncertain, Amir Ghalenoei’s side can take pride in completing the group stage without suffering defeat—an achievement that keeps their knockout dream alive, at least for now.
