Belgium delivered one of its most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating New Zealand 5-1 on Friday to secure top spot in Group G and book its place in the Round of 32.
A clinical display led by Leandro Trossard, who scored twice, and midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne ensured the Red Devils finished above Egypt in the group standings. Belgium will now face one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams in the knockout stage.
Belgium dominated possession from the outset but were initially frustrated after having an early penalty decision overturned following a VAR review.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 28th minute. A dangerous corner from Kevin De Bruyne caused confusion inside the New Zealand penalty area as defender Tim Payne failed to deal with the delivery, allowing Leandro Trossard to react quickest and poke home from close range.
The Arsenal forward doubled Belgium’s advantage five minutes into the second half after once again combining brilliantly with De Bruyne. Trossard’s initial effort was blocked, but he reacted instantly to bury the rebound and make it 2-0.
Belgium’s captain was at the heart of everything positive throughout the contest.
Having already provided the assist for Trossard’s second goal, De Bruyne added his own name to the scoresheet in the 66th minute with a composed strike from the edge of the penalty area to put the Red Devils firmly in control.
Rudi Garcia’s tactical decision to leave Romelu Lukaku on the bench from the start proved inspired, allowing Belgium’s attack to become more fluid with Trossard operating in advanced positions and creating additional space for De Bruyne to dictate play.
New Zealand found a late consolation through Elijah Just, briefly reducing the deficit after a spirited attacking move.
However, Belgium quickly restored their dominance. Substitute Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to score, while fellow replacement Alexis Saelemaekers also found the net to complete an emphatic 5-1 victory and underline Belgium’s attacking depth.
The commanding win confirmed Belgium as Group G champions, finishing ahead of Egypt and carrying significant momentum into the knockout rounds.
