Switzerland secured top spot in Group B of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating tournament co-hosts Canada 2-1 in their final group-stage encounter at BC Place Stadium, Vancouver.
Goals from Ruben Vargas and rising star Johan Manzambi guided Murat Yakin’s side to victory, capping off an impressive group-stage campaign and confirming Switzerland as group winners with seven points.
Canada, meanwhile, advanced with four points after holding off the challenge of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who defeated Qatar 3-1 but narrowly missed out on qualification.
Having drawn 1-1 with Qatar before dismantling Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, Switzerland entered the decisive clash level on points with Canada but determined to seize control of the group.
The Europeans immediately imposed themselves on proceedings and nearly opened the scoring after just 11 minutes. Veteran full-back Ricardo Rodriguez threaded a superb pass through to Breel Embolo, who found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, only for the Canadian shot-stopper to produce a crucial save.
Canada, fresh from their emphatic 6-0 victory over Qatar, struggled to establish rhythm in possession but came close to breaking the deadlock late in the first half. A flowing move involving Alistair Johnston and Jonathan David created an opening for Ali Ahmed, whose powerful effort was denied by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Although the opening 45 minutes ended scoreless, Switzerland looked the more composed and dangerous side throughout.
The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after halftime.
Just 40 seconds into the second half, a dangerous delivery from the right flank caused confusion inside the Canadian penalty area. After Embolo and two Canadian defenders failed to clear, the ball fell kindly to Ruben Vargas, who controlled brilliantly before firing past Crépeau to make it 1-0.
The goal stunned the home crowd and gave Switzerland complete momentum.
Switzerland doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through one of the tournament’s breakout performers.
Embolo drove into the penalty area before Canadian defender Johnston lost his footing under pressure. The Swiss forward quickly squared the ball to Johan Manzambi, who finished first time. The effort slipped through the hands of Crépeau and into the net, giving the young striker his third goal of the tournament.
Having impressed with two goals off the bench against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Manzambi was rewarded with a starting berth by Yakin and once again delivered on the biggest stage.
Facing elimination concerns, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch introduced a series of attacking substitutions in search of a response.
The changes paid dividends in the 76th minute when substitute Promise David reduced the deficit. The forward reacted quickest inside the box after excellent work from Jonathan David, finishing clinically to reignite Canadian hopes.
Buoyed by the goal, Canada pushed aggressively for an equaliser that would have secured first place in the group.
Defender Derek Cornelius came agonisingly close with a powerful header in the 79th minute, while another late aerial opportunity was comfortably gathered by Kobel deep into stoppage time.
Despite the late pressure, Switzerland held firm to secure all three points and top the group.
Switzerland’s victory saw them finish atop Group B with seven points, while Canada advanced in second place with four points.
