Co-hosts Mexico kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in style with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening Group A encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured a deserved three points for El Tri in a match that also produced three red cards and plenty of controversy.
The hosts started brightly and were rewarded in the first half when a defensive mistake by South Africa proved costly.
After winning possession high up the field, Erik Lira delivered a precise pass to Julián Quiñones, who fired a powerful finish beyond the goalkeeper to send the Azteca crowd into celebration.
The goal settled Mexico and allowed them to dictate much of the tempo against a South African side that struggled to create clear opportunities.
South Africa’s challenge became significantly harder five minutes into the second half when Sphephelo Sithole was shown a red card following a dangerous challenge on Brian Gutiérrez.
Playing with a numerical advantage, Mexico continued to push forward and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute.
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose highest inside the penalty area to head home from close range, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.
South Africa were reduced to nine men in the 84th minute when captain Themba Zwane received a red card for violent conduct, while Mexico defender César Montes was also dismissed during stoppage time after a late challenge.
The victory gives Mexico an ideal start to life in Group A and strengthens belief that the co-hosts can make a deep run in front of their home supporters.
Mexico will now turn their focus to a highly anticipated clash against South Korea in Guadalajara, where another victory could move them closer to securing a place in the knockout rounds.
For South Africa, the road becomes considerably more difficult. Bafana Bafana must quickly regroup ahead of a pivotal Group A showdown against the Czech Republic. With no points on the board and suspensions to manage following the red cards, the next match has become a must-win encounter if they hope to keep their World Cup dream alive.
