A decisive step toward addressing the growing challenges in Malaysian football is set to take place, with the Malaysian Football League confirming plans to hold a high-level roundtable discussion involving top club executives next week.
The development was confirmed by Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon, Chief Executive Officer of Selangor FC, who revealed that invitations have already been distributed to clubs across the league.
Malaysian football has been grappling with mounting financial pressures and structural concerns, with several clubs openly acknowledging the need for urgent reform.
Dr Johan emphasized that the upcoming session will bring together CEOs from across the league to exchange ideas and explore practical solutions.
“MFL has issued invitations for a roundtable discussion. We expect to sit down with all club CEOs next week to share views and ideas on how to improve and strengthen the league moving forward,” he said.
The initiative comes after multiple Liga Malaysia clubs voiced their support for a collective discussion to tackle ongoing issues threatening the sustainability of the competition.
Among those backing the move are Penang FC, Sabah FC, Negeri Sembilan FC, Terengganu FC, Johor Darul Ta’zim, and Kuching City FC—all of whom have expressed readiness to engage in serious dialogue.
Their unified stance reflects growing concern over financial instability affecting a majority of teams, as well as broader questions surrounding the structure and long-term direction of domestic football.
The push for dialogue gained traction following earlier remarks by Dr Johan, who highlighted the financial strain faced by many clubs and called for a comprehensive review of the league’s framework.
With operational costs rising and revenue under pressure, the roundtable is expected to focus heavily on financial sustainability, governance improvements, and potential restructuring measures.
The upcoming meeting could prove pivotal in shaping the future of Liga Malaysia, as stakeholders look to implement meaningful reforms ahead of the next season.
