Johor Southern Tigers endured a painful overtime defeat in their BCL Asia-East debut, falling 80-90 to Hi-Tech Basketball Club in a fiercely contested Group A clash at the Dewa United Arena, Tangerang.
Despite a spirited comeback and pushing the game beyond regulation, the Malaysian champions were ultimately undone by a late surge from the Thai side in overtime.
After struggling through the early stages and trailing for much of the first three quarters, Southern Tigers mounted an impressive comeback in the fourth.
Ahmed Hill led the charge with a game-high 24 points, carrying the offensive burden and giving his side a chance to snatch victory.
With seconds remaining in regulation, Hill attempted a decisive three-pointer that could have sealed a famous win—but the shot fell just short, sending the contest into overtime.
The turning point came before overtime even began. Aaron Geramipoor, who had been dominant with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.
His exit left a significant gap in the paint, limiting Southern Tigers’ ability to control rebounds and defend against Hi-Tech’s physical inside play in the closing stages.
In the end, Hi-Tech capitalised ruthlessly. A quick three-pointer from Freddie Lish set the tone before Eric Freeman took over, scoring crucial baskets and controlling the boards
Freeman finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 points in overtime, sealing the win for the Thai champions.
Southern Tigers return to action against hosts Dewa United within 24 hours, in a crucial clash that could define their path in the tournament.
