Malaysia has been handed what many consider a favourable group-stage draw for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup 2026, offering a clear roadmap as the national squads prepare for the world’s most prestigious team badminton championships in Horsens, Denmark.
National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen welcomed the outcome, describing it as a positive development that allows Malaysia to fine-tune preparations with greater clarity.
With opponents now confirmed, Jonassen emphasized that the focus will shift towards refining tactical approaches for each tie.
“This is exciting for both teams. Most importantly, we can now finalize key parts of our preparations and tailor our strategies based on the opponents we will face,” Jonassen said with BERNAMA.
He added that the final piece of the puzzle remains the official match schedule, which will further assist in detailed planning.
Despite the perceived advantage, Jonassen urged the squad to remain grounded.
“We must stay humble, aware, and confident. To succeed in major tournaments, you have to overcome every challenge in front of you.”
Meanwhile, doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky echoed similar sentiments, calling on players to maintain full focus during preparations both at home and in Denmark.
Both the men’s and women’s squads are scheduled to undergo an intensive 10-day training camp in Herning before moving to Horsens for the competition.
In the Thomas Cup, Malaysia have been drawn in Group B alongside Japan (2014 champions), England, and Finland
For the Uber Cup, Malaysia will also compete in Group B, facing Japan (six-time champions), Turkey, and South Africa
Only the top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals in both competitions.
Malaysia’s men’s team boasts a proud legacy, having lifted the Thomas Cup five times — in 1949, 1952, 1955, 1967, and 1992.
In contrast, the women’s team is still chasing its first Uber Cup title, with its best performances being quarter-final finishes in 2004, 2008, and 2010.
The 2026 edition will take place at Forum Horsens from April 24 to May 3, where Malaysia aim to translate preparation into performance.
