Selangor FC have cemented their grip on second place in the Liga Super, edging out Kuala Lumpur City 3-2 in a breathless encounter at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on Sunday.
Fielding a formidable lineup, the Red Giants were spearheaded by captain Faisal Halim, with the lethal attacking duo of Alvin Fortes and Chrigor Moraes tasked with dismantling the hosts’ defense. KL City, refusing to be intimidated on home turf, deployed Safawi Rasid to lead their frontline, setting the stage for a fiery rivalry clash.
Selangor came out of the gates swinging, piling early pressure on the City Boys. Alvin Fortes fired an early warning shot that narrowly missed Quincy Kammeraad’s goal. At the other end, Selangor shot-stopper Kalamullah Al-Hafiz earned his keep with a crucial save to deny KL City’s dangerous import, Madger Gomes.
The deadlock was shattered in the 29th minute. Fortes turned provider, setting up Faisal Halim to open the scoring and send the traveling Red Giants supporters into raptures. The 1-0 advantage held firm until the halftime whistle.
Riding the momentum of their vocal away support, Selangor intensified their attacks after the break. Despite Kammeraad producing another athletic save to deny Moraes, Mamadou Diarra found the back of the net in the 60th minute to double the visitors’ advantage.
Just ten minutes later, January signing Hugo Boumous officially announced his arrival, netting his first goal for the club to make it a commanding 3-0.
Just as the match looked entirely settled, the City Boys mounted a ferocious late fightback. Goals from Madger Gomes and Safawi Rasid in the dying moments of the game slashed the deficit, but Selangor’s defense held their nerve at the death to secure maximum points.
The 3-2 victory keeps Selangor FC firmly in second place with 42 points, while KL City remain parked in fourth with 39 points.
