National men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia’s long-awaited return to international competition ended in an early setback after he fell to India’s Ayush Shetty in the first round of the Malaysia Open at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur.
Still easing his way back from injury, the former world No. 1 went down 12-21, 17-21 in 38 minutes to the 22nd-ranked Indian, showing clear signs of caution as he managed his movement and shot selection throughout the match.
Currently ranked 144th in the world following an injury-disrupted season, the 27-year-old has prioritised rehabilitation over back surgery in a bid to extend his career — a decision that continues to shape his measured approach on court.
The former All England champion had earlier indicated that the Malaysia Open would serve primarily as a fitness gauge, and while the result fell short of expectations, the outing provided a valuable benchmark ahead of a demanding run of tournaments.
Despite the first-round exit, Lee remains committed to building momentum and will compete in three consecutive events — the India Open, Indonesia Masters and Thailand Masters — as part of his structured return to full competitive rhythm.
A proven performer on the world stage, Lee boasts six World Tour titles to his name, including last year’s Australia Open crown. His career highlights also include the prestigious All England title in 2021 and a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, achievements that underline his pedigree despite his current ranking position.
Malaysia’s singles challenge at the Malaysia Open continues through Leong Jun Hao, the nation’s only other representative in the draw, who is set to begin his campaign against China’s Wang Zheng Xing tomorrow.
