Johor Darul Ta’zim delivered a resounding statement of intent, thrashing Sabah FC 8-0 in the Liga Super Malaysia 2025/26 at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri.
The Southern Tigers, captained by Afiq Fazail and with Syihan Hazmi in goal, wasted no time in stamping their dominance. Oscar Arribas opened the scoring in the 6th minute before Joao Figueiredo doubled the lead just four minutes later with a simple finish past Khairul Fahmi.
Figueiredo struck again in the 23rd minute, assisted by Arif Aiman, leaving Sabah reeling. Despite attempts from the visitors to test Syihan, their efforts went wide.
Raul Parra added the fourth in the 44th minute, and Figueiredo completed his hat-trick deep into first-half stoppage time to give JDT a commanding 5-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw no let-up from JDT. Bergson Da Silva got on the scoresheet in the 60th minute with a penalty after being brought down by Dinesh Rajasingam.
The Brazilian forward doubled his tally in the 74th minute, making it 7-0, before completing his own hat-trick in the dying moments to seal an emphatic 8-0 victory.
The result not only gave JDT their first domestic win after the ACL Elite disappointment but also reaffirmed their attacking firepower, with both Figueiredo and Bergson bagging hat-tricks.
JDT will now turn their attention to the Shopee Cup showdown against Bangkok United on Thursday, while Sabah must regroup quickly ahead of their Liga Super clash against Negeri Sembilan at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman Paroi.
