Singapore U22 national team has decided not participate in Men’s Football event in Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China during 23 September – 8 October 2023.
This was decided following discussions between Sport Singapore (SportSG), the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and SportSG supports this decision and SNOC has no objections.
And the reason for the decision to not participate in the Asian Games is in line with one of the recommendations from the Review, which is for the Singapore U22 Team to focus on two priority tournaments: the SEA Games and the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers. and Asian Games is a competition outside the FIFA window and takes place in the same month as the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers.
“The past few weeks, the FAS has gone through a period of introspection, and we are right now in the midst of implementing the recommendations from the recent SEA Games review”, Bernard Tan, Acting President of FAS said after discussion.
In addition, Added Yazeen Buhari, General Secretary of the FAS. has said “Learning from the review, we also considered the preparation time required to get the team ready for each tournament, vis-a-vis the players’ commitments to their clubs, schools, and national service. Given that the Asian Games comes off the back of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers, this makes participation particularly challenging.”
